Hybrid car types and their differences

We analyze the different models on the market.

Hybrid cars are becoming one of the best solutions for respecting the environment while driving. This is possible thanks to the combination of two engines: a more conventional type (internal combustion) and another electric type (batteries). A way to achieve greater electrical range while reducing gasoline consumption and, with it, pollution.

So the question is, what type of hybrid cars are available and what differentiates them?

Main advantages

Regardless of the model you choose, hybrid cars have a series of benefits compared to gasoline- or diesel-powered cars.

Besides reduce considerably pollution, calculate your fuel consumption offer a less than value that one of the models diesel and gas, generate fewer noise, your maintenance is smaller and cheaper and are able to use your own energy recycled. Their only drawback is that they are more expensive (although there are subsidies in place to reduce their cost).

Types of hybrid cars

As we said before, hybrid cars have two engines. Most have an internal combustion engine powered by gasoline, although there are cases where diesel is used. Based on this, there are three types: series, parallel, and combined.

  • Parallel: these vehicles have a combustion engine and an electric engine that can work separately or in tandem to propel the vehicle. This system, also known as semi-hybrid, is used in most cars today.
  • Series: these are powered only by the electric motor. The only function of the conventional engine in this case is to power the electric engine, as it is not connected to the wheels. Thus, when the battery that powers the car is full, the combustion engine stops working. This gives the car greater autonomy.
  • Combined: are those that use both engines. The electric engine works only at low speeds while, at high speeds, the two engines drive the vehicle at the same time. This aspect greatly reduces gas consumption.

Apart from these three types of hybrid cars, these green cars are also classified on the basis of whether they are plug-ins or not. To do this, you need to check if the battery is recharged through the electricity supply.

Grants for buying a hybrid car

As we noted before, one of the biggest disadvantages to date of hybrid cars is their price, which is higher than that of conventional cars. To alleviate this, the Government and Autonomous Communities have launched several grant schemes, such as the VEA Plan, for any car powered by alternative energies, or the MOVES Plan, for plug-in and electric hybrids. In addition, some brands offer discounts ranging from €1,000 to €6,000.

At BBVA we also want to help you make the purchase. For this reason, if you are a customer, you are eligible for the Green Car Loan, specifically designed for those who want very good conditions when changing vehicles. Visit BBVA.es to find out more.
