How do hybrid and electric cars work?

Hybrid cars are an option that's halfway between traditional and electric vehicles. In these cars, the engine combines an electric battery with a gasoline or diesel engine, such that the electricity produced by the combustion engine is also used to supply the vehicle's battery. The vehicle thus alternates between the electric battery and the engine as its source of energy, and recharges its own battery while driving. In contrast, electric cars rely exclusively on electricity for their operation, so instead of refueling, their batteries have to be recharged after being used. 

When driving, the operation of these vehicles is not significantly different. In fact, the switchover that occurs in hybrid engines is automatic, meaning the driver will not have to worry about recharging it.

Advantages of green cars

The main advantage of both hybrid and electric cars is that they reduce greenhouse gas emissions and consume less fuel. Hybrid vehicles have significantly lower emissions, while electric vehicles have no emissions at all since they don't have a combustion engine. In fact, these cars not only offer a better option for the environment, they also represent an alternative to the imminent depletion of fossil fuels. In hybrid vehicles, the electric motor is responsible for providing much of the power (for starting the car, for example), so it consumes much less gasoline. 

On top of these advantages are certain administrative and tax benefits. The need to reduce pollution in cities has led many governments to implement policies that promote the use of green cars. And so, the drivers of hybrid or electric vehicles can access the urban centers of many cities where traditional vehicles are no longer permitted. These cars are also eligible for discounts at tolls or parking lots. 

Experts also agree that electric cars require less maintenance. The parts used in electric vehicles are not as complex, and they vibrate less, making them less likely to malfunction. As a result, over the long term, the owner of a car of this type will save on its maintenance. 

Finally, contrary to what many users think, these vehicles have evolved significantly in recent years. In fact, nowadays their range can be the same as, or at least similar to, that of any other car. Something that differs in the fuel consumption fossil, most notably in the hybrid models, which is smaller if it compare with those ones of gas or diésel, fact that can check with our calculator of fuel.

Disadvantages of green cars

Although electric cars and hybrids reduce emissions, they cannot be said to be completely pollution-free. On the one hand, hybrid cars still use fossil fuels, so their emissions are lower, but not zero. However, the electric batteries used by both hybrid and electric cars are not reusable and, like the batteries in cellphones and other devices, they become a source of pollution once they turn into waste that cannot be recycled.

Similarly, the price can be a major drawback for some users. These vehicles are still more expensive than traditional cars, as are their batteries. A significant investment, considering how batteries degrade and the fact that they have to be replaced every 10 or 15 years. 

Although these vehicles have a longer range nowadays, it still poses a problem for electric vehicles. Unlike hybrids, these cars cannot recharge their batteries while they are driving; instead, they have to be plugged into stations specifically designed for that purpose. The charging process usually takes several hours, unless it's done at a rapid charger. However, there are few recharging stations available in Spain at the moment.
