Biometrics: maximum security in your banking transactions

Authorize payments online by using your fingerprint or taking a selfie.
Biometrics is based on the unique and non-transferable features that each person has. We are talking about, for example, your fingerprint, face or iris. These are biometric data, whose use is increasingly common. It's not unusual, for example, to be able to unlock your smartphone or confirm an online payment using a finger. In some cases, you can also choose facial recognition or even an iris scan. In all of them, its application is the result of one reason in particular: security.

They also help create a better user experience. Before its arrival, it was commonplace to use alphanumeric passwords that were hard to remember (and easy to hack). Nowadays, thanks to biometrics, you just have to place your finger in the circular scanner or show your face to the camera. Simple, convenient... and hard to hack. So this is a technology that is rooted in the present and that will undoubtedly mark the future of security.

Banking and biometrics

The world of banking was among the first to adopt the use of biometrics. At BBVA, and bearing in mind that security is one of our priorities, we implemented it long ago in order to offer the best possible service to our customers

We took the first step by including iris identification when making online payments. This was followed by the Immediate Registration service, which lets a customer open an account using facial recognition (more specifically, with a simple selfie) or validate payments for their online purchases.

All these examples show how BBVA is at the forefront in terms of options for successfully implementing the SCA (or dual authentication), which is being introduced by the PSD2 regulation.

In it, this "more human" authentication system will be vitally important, since it won't be enough to enter the aforementioned password with every transaction; instead, 2 or 3 factors from these categories will be required: something the customer knows (such as a password), something the customer has (such as their phone) and something the customer is (such as a fingerprint or face).

How do I activate fingerprint recognition in the BBVA app?

Activating fingerprint recognition in the world's best banking app (according to Forrester) is very simple. You just have to record this fingerprint in the device and then set up the application to make this your validation tool. Finally, you just need to validate it every time you want to access your online account. The procedure is similar if instead of this you opt for face recognition

Both options guarantee the maximum possible peace of mind, since no two fingerprints or faces are alike.
