Independent companies specialized in analyzing securities and companies. An independent company's conclusions about a company's ability to meet its short-term and long-term financial obligations are reflected in the rating.

The rating is a tool that enables investors to assess the risk of an issuer, or of a specific issuance, based on a predetermined rating scale.
