How to deposit money at an ATM

We'll explain how you can deposit cash into an ATM and describe the multiple options offered by this service, the maximum amounts you can deposit, etc.

You can use ATMs from the BBVA network to deposit cash, regardless of whether or not you are already a customer of the bank. However, the steps you need to follow will vary depending upon whether or not you are a customer.

How to deposit cash if you are a BBVA customer

  • Your BBVA credit card. Your login information (username and password) for bbva.es or for the BBVA app.
  • Remember that the maximum amount you can deposit at one time is €10,000.

You'll be able to pay for your purchases over time and use it at over 6,000 ATMs.

How to deposit cash if you are not a BBVA customer

  • At the ATM you must first select the option “Access without card/passbook”.
  • Select the option to make a deposit into a BBVA account.

Since you are not a customer of the bank, the maximum amount you can deposit at one time is €1,000. For higher amounts, the person performing the operation must be identified.

Steps to follow when depositing cash at an ATM from the BBVA network

Regardless of whether or not you are a customer, once you have everything you need to make the deposit you will have to follow the steps below to complete the process:

  • Insert your card into the ATM so that the start screen appears.
  • Use your PIN to identify yourself.
  • Select the option “Perform another operation”.
  • Select the option “Deposit cash”.
  • Select the recipient account into which you want the deposit to be made, using one of these options:
    • Into one of my accounts.
    • Into an account with a different account holder.
  • Enter the description and recipient for the deposit.
  • Follow the instructions on how to insert the cash into the machine. Remember that you cannot deposit coins, only bills, which must be in a stack and not in an envelope or held together with a paperclip.
  • Insert the cash into the slot provided for that purpose. A green light will blink on the ATM to indicate that the machine is ready to accept your bills. Remember that you can only deposit a stack of up to 100 bills at a time, regardless of the values of these bills, and you can deposit up to 3 stacks per deposit.
  • A count of the cash deposited will appear on the ATM screen, and you will be given the option of either depositing more bills or continuing with the operation.
  • At this point you will have three options for the deposit: ask the ATM to return part of the money deposited, or deposit all of the money into the specified account, or deposit an additional amount.
  • A summary of the deposit will appear on the screen, specifying the recipient account, the recipient, the description of the deposit, the amount deposited, and the total number of bills accepted. Review this information and then press “Continue”.
  • You will have the option to save the operation as “quick or favorite” so you can perform it in the future without having to enter all of the data again. A confirmation for the deposit will also appear on the screen, and you will be able to select either “I want a receipt” or “I do not want a receipt”. If you want a receipt for the operation you can get a printed copy, or else you can receive a copy by SMS or email, always at no cost.

If you make the deposit into one of your own accounts, the money will be available right away. If you make the deposit into another account holder's BBVA account, the money will be available the same day.

Advanced features for the operation

In addition to allowing you to deposit cash into one of your accounts or into another account holder's BBVA account, there are other advanced features offered along with the cash deposit operation.

Maximum deposit limit

You can deposit a maximum of 3 stacks of bills, with up to 100 bills per stack. In other words, a maximum of 300 bills divided into 3 stacks deposited. The value of each bill does not matter.

The “Return cash” option

You have the option to either deposit all of the cash you inserted into the ATM, or else to select a lower amount. If you want the ATM to return some of the cash to you, use the following steps:

  • Once you have inserted the cash, the screen will display a count of the bills deposited and their total amount. Press the “Return cash” option in the lower part.
  • Indicate the amount that you want the ATM to return to you from the cash you previously inserted.
  • Select from among the following options:
    • In cash: the ATM will return the money in coins, up to a maximum of 20 units.
    • To account: select the recipient account you want the amount returned to go into (a list of your accounts will be displayed).
