COVID-19 assistance for renting a primary residence
At BBVA, we have helped reduce the impact of the coronavirus
At the Council of Ministers meeting of 03/31, measures were approved to help individuals who were in financial hardship due to the COVID-19 crisis to make their rent payments. These measures were contained in RDL 11/2020, and involve eviction procedures, contract extensions and moratoriums on rent payments.
- Deadlines and regulations
How did the rent assistance programs work?
- You could request an extension of your rental contract if you were the affected person, if the contract was for your primary residence and the contract expired between April 2, 2020 and September 30, 2020.
If you were entitled to the extension, your contract was extended for up to 6 months.
- If you needed to defer the monthly rent payment, you were able to request a moratorium until September 30, 2020, if you were the person affected and the home was your primary residence.
If you were eligible for the rent payment moratorium, it could be applied for a maximum of 4 months.
- In either case, you had to prove your inability to pay as a result of the COVID-19 crisis, specifying if you had been furloughed or unemployed, and prove that your income was less than 3 times the IPREM.
The rent payment and associated expenses had to exceed 35% of the household's net income.
