Travel health insurance: reasons for purchasing it

The price of worry-free travel is nothing compared to the risk of traveling unprotected.

Take your health seriously, especially when traveling. Any health-related issue, such as a sudden illness or accident, can be very expensive if you don't have health insurance during the trip that guarantees you medical assistance when traveling abroad.

Most countries don't require visitors to have medical insurance. But there are exceptions: Russia, Mongolia, Armenia and Tajikistan are just some of the countries that will not issue a visa if the traveler doesn't have travel assistance insurance that includes medical and health coverage. The best thing to do would be to verify this information with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to avoid any surprises.

If traveling within Europe

If traveling in Europe, don't forget to take your European Health Insurance Card with you so you can be covered in every European Union country, whether you travel for leisure, work or studies. Please note that the EHIC does not ensure that your healthcare will be totally free. In some cases, you may have to pay the amount on the spot, although it will be reimbursed upon your return.

With the European Health Insurance Card, Spanish citizens have access to public healthcare under the same conditions as nationals in the following countries: Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Cyprus, Croatia, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Slovakia, Slovenia, Iceland, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Norway, Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, the Czech Republic, Romania, Sweden, Switzerland and the United Kingdom.

If traveling outside Europe

Outside the scope of the European Health Insurance Card, you should take out a policy that will cover large medical expenses.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs recommends that travelers take out medical insurance when traveling abroad so they can be protected and covered if they get injured or sick during the trip, including evacuation by a medical plane.

If you are going to visit several countries during the trip, the best thing is to make sure that your policy is valid in all of them and that you will be covered at all times.

There are private health insurance policies, such as BBVA Más Salud Insurance, that can guarantee emergency healthcare abroad, even if traveling to the United States.

For example, the cost of transferring a sick person on a medical flight from the USA is around 50 thousand euros. If the trip back to Spain takes place on a scheduled flight in a stretcher under a doctor's care, the cost would be around 20 thousand euros.

If you're traveling abroad and you want a policy that protects you and gives you peace of mind, at BBVA we have BBVA Travel Insurance, which offers expanded coverage options that provide everything from health coverage to compensation for delayed trips to lost, damaged or stolen luggage

If you're going to engage in dangerous activities or sports

Activities and sports such as scuba diving, mountaineering, caving, climbing, kite surfing, skiing, paragliding or those related to driving are considered dangerous, to some extent.

As a result, we recommend making sure that your travel health insurance includes specific coverage for these activities and that it includes everything needed to deal with a rescue, medical evacuation or the transfer of mortal remains.

And choose the one that best fits your needs.

If you have a chronic condition or pain that will require treatment with medications during the trip, don't forget to take them with you in your hand luggage in their original, labeled containers.

You will also need to have with you your doctor's contact details and the information on your medical situation, the treatment and any medications you are taking.

To make sure nothing unexpected ruins your trip and that you can travel the world with the peace of mind and protection you deserve, we recommend taking out health insurance for your trip.
