As a result of the acceptance of the commitments offered by MasterCard and VISA to the European Commission, it has been agreed to implement the following limits to interchange fees for interregional transactions carried out with consumer cards with merchants in the European Economic Area:
- 20 basis points (bps) in consumer debit and 30 bps in consumer credit, for card-present transactions.
- 115 bps in consumer debit and 150 bps in consumer credit, for card-not-present transactions.
MasterCard will implement these limits on October 19, 2019; they will remain in force until November 2, 2024.
